Nice post. I would like to add something here: apart from getting your articles published on those popular article directories, you should also try to find some niche article directories. If you are writing financial articles, try to find some financial article directories.

Apart from articles, Press Releases are also good. For example, when you have a new theme for your website, you can write a Press Release saying “the website undergoes a facelift” and publish it on standard PR distribution websites.

Article marketing is one of my favourite online marketing methods. It is very reliable for driving steady and targeted traffic for a long period of time.

While submitting articles to top directories such as GoArticles and EzineArticles is quite good for driving traffic, mass article submissions are the way to go for improving your SEO.

When doing things this way it is vital that you spin your articles before sending them out to all the directories. This way you have nothing to worry about with the duplicate content penalty.
