I beg to disagree on one of the points listed above.
Link exchange is DEAD! It is in the doldrums of internet marketing. While article submission is helpful, more important is generation of content, promoting others and commenting on other blogs and forums.
Believe it or not even without major SEO (Search Engine Optimization), good content that contributes to the topic being discussed is often discovered. When it is discovered, the other more popular websites then spread the word for you.
Having said that, it is important to promote others much more than you promote yourself. The internet is built on trust and I will help anyone that comments here free of charge to jump-start their website promotion. Just ask tony for my contact or visit one of my sites.

Consistentcy really is the key. Experimentation is good too, sometimes a “new” idea will take off. I’d also add to make connections with others online to help each other out. It’s also a great way to find great content.
